Behind The Box: A New Box!

April Whimseyboxes should be popping up in mailboxes and on front porches all over the US and Canada this week, and if it’s not your first box you might notice something right away: we’ve got a new box! There were a few reasons for the switch. We think the new boxes are higher quality and they are larger so we can fit more/bigger products inside. In addition, the new boxes are made locally here in Houston and from 100% recycled fiberboard which are two things we feel really great about. The box itself is very important to us, so we’d love to hear what you think. Leave a comment below, or send us a note privately.

New Whimseybox

Since the boxes are larger and sturdier we opted to ship them in bubble mailers this month. We did a few tests and they all arrived in good condition, but if you notice any damage due to the new shipping method, please get in touch because we want to hear about it! Below are a few pictures from this month’s shipment while it was waiting in my garage for the USPS to pick it up. In fact, this will be the last month that the boxes are packed and shipped from my house – we’ve found a partner to take over the packing process. While I’m still a little reluctant to hand off such an important job I’m very excited about trading hours of box packing for other projects that will make Whimseybox an even better experience for all of you. Especially because the business that will providing the packing services is an incredible Houston agency that provides jobs and services to for adults with developmental disabilities. I feel so honored to be able to support them through Whimseybox! Stay tuned, we’ll shoot a short behind-the-scenes during the May box packing process.

I got my box today and was so excited to see what was in it… but the box was damaged – it is dented on the top pretty sgnificantly. Nothing inside was affected, but it was a little disappointing since I would love to use the boxes in my craft room each month. Saying that, I love the contents this month and can’t wait to play with the new items.

Thanks for letting us know Michelle. If you could we’d love to see some pics of the damage on your box so we can prevent this from happening in the future. Hope you’re having fun with products! -Alicia

Thank you Whimsey – I will stay tuned to hear comments re: boxes (I’m the owner of the Houston-based co, making the boxes). Love your co — and am thinking — what a great idea for BD presents ( a subscription to Whimsey). Come and see us soon!

Just got my new box. I support what you are trying to do by supporting local businesses and also using recyclables! But….my box was also semi crushed when it arrived. :(

Dana, could you email a few pics (cell phone snaps are fine) to customerservice@whimseybox.com? We’d really like to see how your box was damaged so we can make it right and prevent this from happening in the future! Thanks, Alicia

Hi Whimseybox! I, too, strongly support your efforts in using local products & recylclables, but my box also arrived dinged, slightly crushed, and kind of torn! :( Sad!!

Oh no! Isabel, would you mind emailing customerservice@whimseybox.com? We’d really like to see how your box was damaged so we can make it right and prevent this from happening in the future! Thanks, Alicia

My box arrived in perfect condition. However, this is my 4th box and I am dissappointed with the products I am receiving. They seem cheap and not at all new and exciting. So I am cancelling my subscription.

Thanks for sharing your feedback with us Miranda. We’re sorry to hear that we haven’t met your expectations. – Alicia

My box came today, in great shape no damage. But the items inside we lacking again so I canceled my subscription. I can got to the store and do way more with $15.00 than what I keep getting. Thanks for the good try though.

I very much like the bigger box, which arrived in perfect condition. I was, however, missing the information card. (If you’re just wondering about the new box, you can stop reading now. The rest of this post is TL;DR.)

This is my third Whimseybox, and while my daughters and I look forward to receiving items I wouldn’t normally pick up on my own, I have to agree with several others I’ve read who’ve been disappointed.

On the other hand, I understand that my subscription pays for more than just the items, and more than the box and the packing and postage. It’s fun to open that box with my girls and brainstorm about what we can do with the goodies.

I also keep in mind that this is all relatively new, and the kinks are still being worked out. For those reasons, I’ve decided to sign up for another 3 months to see if things will improve.

Hi Susan, thanks for your feedback. If you’ll email customerservice@whimseybox.com we’ll be glad to send you the art/info card. My apologies that yours was missing this month! – Alicia

I think people expect way too much for $15/month. The cost covers more than just the contents. My daughter is the subscriber and she and I absolutely ADORE the Whimseyboxes that have arrived, so far. Also like the new box itself–size and such. Better for re-use and future storage. Keep it up and feel free to send more glitter!! :-D

Mine was waiting when I returned from vacation. The box was in fine condition, no damage. I must admit that I prefer the original smaller box — it just feels a little sturdier to me. But understand the reason for the switch!

    • Alicia DiRago 05/04/2012, 9:24 pm Reply

Thanks Sarah. Very interested to hear that you feel like the original box was sturdier because we think these feel more durable and that was an important consideration in the switch. We appreciate that you took the time to let us know!

My box arrived safely and without damage. I was surprised at how much bigger the new box really is. I did prefer the magnetic closure to the velcro as it seems like that would last a lot longer. The box was packed nicely as always, and I think its awesome you’re partnering with a local agency providing work for developmentally disabled adults.

    • Alicia DiRago 05/04/2012, 9:22 pm Reply

Thanks for your input Pamela. We think the velco closue will be durable over time, but please let us know if your experience is different!

      • Pamela Thompson 05/10/2012, 11:24 pm Reply

Alicia, My velcro box is still doing great, but my magnetic one doesn’t stay closed, so I was certainly wrong about the durability. Overall, I’m loving WhimseyBox though. Love the concept and execution. :-)

I am just wondering when I should expect my Whimseybox to arrive…I am a new subscriber and thought when I signed up it said the middle of each month…I still haven’t received May’s box. Also have to say I am a bit disappointed in the products received. I teach art and was really hoping to get some innovative products…I am still gong to hang in with the hopes that some boxes will be worth it…thanks!

I just received my first box in the mail – it was a Mother’s Day gift from my husband and kids. I love the idea but I agree the items inside are cheap. I realize $15 is not a lot of money but a chintzy notebook from oriental trading is almost offensive. I can see how kids would really enjoy the contents but as an adult, I can’t say it’s worth the investment (or time to experiment with – as a mom of 2 I was looking forward to some creative time). Maybe a $20 box would allow you to provide better materials. I hope my next two boxes are more satisfying.

Where could we buy the old boxes. They fit in my shelves for storage and I have a few space left. The new ones are great, but I agree that more glitter will help. (my box was missing the floss)

A little late to the party, but I will say that my last box came damaged (crushed all down one side, actually).
