Featured Community: Balloons and their arch enemy, the Safety Pin

Friday brings the release of the Steve Jobs biopic Jobs, and despite Ashton Kutcher, and despite the poor reviews, we will be watching. Steve Jobs may be famous for being an entrepreneur and leader in the digital age, but his story began with creativity and invention. He once said,

“Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seems obvious to them after a while. That’s because they were able to connect experiences they’ve had and synthesize new things.”

Being innovative is being open-minded and courageous. Crafts and DIY are often just rearranging common things in new and interesting ways. Here are some creative examples from our Whimseybox community.

Safety Pin Bracelet

Safety pins are commonly found on punk rockers baby’s diapers, but these metal fasteners look so pretty all strung in a row. With the addition of seed beads and some elastic thread, this inexpensive and simple project allows you to customize your colors and create fun patterns by changing the order and color of the pins or individual beads.

Balloon Vase

This occasional decoration just got promoted to everyday decor. Instead of filling a balloon with air, try filling it with flowers. Simply wrap a deflated balloon around a vase or votive for a flower arrangement that really pops.

We encourage you to keep connecting things in new and different ways. Be courageous, creative and craft on!
